Highlights of Major Release 12.2 include Quality of Service, Traffic Classification, and Multimedia advancements, in addition to the introduction of the Cisco 2600XM Series Router. This release will integrate the functionality and hardware support previously introduced in Cisco IOS Software Releases 12.1 and 12.1T.

Cisco IOS Software Major Release 12.2 achieved General Deployment certification in February 2004. With this certification, Major Release 12.2 adds a new level of maturity to the already robust portfolio of Cisco IOS Software releases. The releases in this portfolio, including Release 12.2, Release 12.3, and Release 12.3T, each address specific customer needs.

Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.2SE is the Cisco IOS Software 12.2S based-release vehicle for the code migration of the 12.1EA train for the Catalyst 2970, 3550, 3560 and 3750 platforms. In addition, it supports images for the Catalyst 2960 and 3750-metro platforms. It is an ED release (STED) optimized for the product innovation and differentiation to evolve traditional Ethernet LANs into integrated switching systems for Enterprise, Commercial and Metro Ethernet Access. With high-performance, comprehensive security, availability and ease of use, these switching systems are optimized for data, voice, video and wireless applications. This release vehicle is based upon the Cisco IOS Software 12.2(18)S maintenance release. Any early deployment (ED) release of software needs to be used in a test network before you deploy it in a production network.
